THE SCIENCE OF SHOOTING: THE TEXTBOOK SHOT

The first shot style we’ll look at is The Textbook Shot.

Coaches love textbooks shooters, they are more consistent and reliable players. The proper alignment and simplified motion makes the shot repeatable.

Textbook shooters add the threat of a three-pointer and spread the defense.

Textbook shooters have their hand centered under the ball with their elbow pointed at the target. The elbow is bent at 90 degrees with the thumb at eyebrow height. They extend their arm up, snap their wrist towards the basket, and finish with their elbow above their eyebrow.

Over the summer we’ll take an in-depth look at eight different shot styles in a new series, THE SCIENCE OF SHOOTING. Stay tuned!

THE SCIENCE OF SHOOTING: CALL YOUR SHOT

With SOLIDshot, we’ve made shooting a science.

SOLIDshot collects data from every shot our players take. The device tracks the location of the arm and hand down to the degree. SOLIDshot also timestamps each stage of a shot, with timing precise to the millisecond. With this data, our team of scientists has identified eight distinct shot styles.

Over the summer we’ll take an in-depth look at each of these shot styles in a new series, THE SCIENCE OF SHOOTING.

Call your shot style and get ready to take your game to the next level!

Science of Shooting - What defines a textbook basketball shot?

Here's the first part in our science of shooting series! Based on what we've learned from our shooting experts and the data we've gathered, these are the distinguishing characteristics of a textbook shot.

CHARACTERISTICS

1. Line up your shooting arm directly under the ball with the wrist cocked.

2. Bend your elbow about 90° and point it towards the basket.

3. Extend your arm “up” in one motion towards the basket.

4. Fully extend the arm as your wrist snaps.

5. Finish with the elbow above your eyebrow and wrist fully snapped.

WHAT'S YOUR SHOT STYLE?

The SOLIDshot team is excited to kick off a new series on the science of shooting!

SOLIDshot collects data about every shot our players take. This data is accurate both in space (to the degree) and in time (to the millisecond). Using this data, the team has identified what makes one style of basketball shot different than another.

We'll be sharing more details about each style over the coming weeks. Here is a preview of what's coming. Do you see your shot here?
